7.3.11 Launceston and Dress 70

7.3.11 Launceston and Dress 70

The weather picked up mile by mile as we descended from Cradle Mountain and by the time we arrived it was 24C.  We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay the cosy Cabin and fabulous fresh air and walks.

as we were driving we kept seeing houses and buildings with topairy outside as we got nearer to the town limits we realised its their claim to fame. David at the war memorial with topairy soldiers

Launceston and the River Tamar sound familiar – they were both named amongst many other places after places in the UK.  They do however pronounce them differently Launceston is pronounced as its spelt laun ces ton no slurring here.   We have been caught out several times already with these different pronunciations

The city is very well preserved and has the largest concentration of historic buildings in Australia apparently.  We therefore decided a walking tour would be the best way of seeing them.

Dress 70 is Robyn Jones co-owner of the 1824 furniture and cabinet makers and Historic walk proprietor. www.:/842.com.aus .  She is so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Launceston and its history we had a most informative and enjoyable afternoon.

There were only two other ladies with us on the walk they had seen an article about the walks in the paper that morning and decided to come along too.  Both local they were as interested as we were to understand more of the history and buildings.

We ate outside tonight by the River Tamar watching the yachts in the harbour –Sydney tomorrow shame to leave Tasmania; we could have easily had two weeks here it there is so much to see and enjoy.

Me before a long shower before our dinner at the Leeve Restaurant

However we’re off to see Billy Connolly at the Sydney opera house tomorrow night 8.3.11 so to get in the mood we watched him on UTube before bed.
